Thoracic/Lumbar Prone Pressure (Perpendicular Stretch)

You are here:

Steps for Treatment:

  1. Patient is prone, physician stands side of table opposite of side to be treated
  2. Physician places thumb/thenar eminence of one hand on medial aspect of patient’s thoracic paravertebral musculature overlying the transverse processes on side opposite physician
  3. Physician places thenar eminence of other hand on top of abducted thumb of bottom hand or over hand itself
  4. Keep elbows straight, using body weight, physician exerts gentle force anteriorly (downward) to engage soft tissue, then laterally, perpendicular to thoracic paravertebral musculature
  5. Hold for several seconds, slowly release, repeat in gentle, rhythmic/kneading fashion; reposition hands to contact different levels of the spine (for thoracic levels!)
  6. Repeat on opposite side
