Steps for Treatment:
- Patient is prone, physician stands side of table opposite of side to be treated
- Physician places thumb/thenar eminence of one hand on medial aspect of patient’s thoracic paravertebral musculature overlying the transverse processes on side opposite physician
- Physician places thenar eminence of other hand on top of abducted thumb of bottom hand or over hand itself
- Keep elbows straight, using body weight, physician exerts gentle force anteriorly (downward) to engage soft tissue, then laterally, perpendicular to thoracic paravertebral musculature
- Hold for several seconds, slowly release, repeat in gentle, rhythmic/kneading fashion; reposition hands to contact different levels of the spine (for thoracic levels!)
- Repeat on opposite side
