Steps for Treatment:
- Patient prone.
- Stand opposite side of dysfunctional rib, the caliper motion would most likely be stuck open in an inhalation dysfunction (11th rib stuck cephalad and the 12th rib stuck caudad)
- Bend patient’s legs away from you and grab ASIS with caudad hand (“happy face”) (sidebend towards)
- Place the thenar eminence of your cephalad hand above rib 11 and push down and lateral with exhalation, or below rib 12 and push up and lateral with exhalation depending on which rib is dysfunctional
- Pull ASIS posterior as you push dysfunctional rib anteriorly as the patient exhales and then resist inhalation
- Repeat 2-3 times
- Passive stretch
- Reassess
