Recall: Psoas Muscle Testing
Steps for Treatment:
- Patient prone with physician standing on ipsilateral side of leg being tested
- Bend the knee and be sure to stabilize the pelvis on ipsilateral side so hip does not lift!
- Lift the leg off the table until resistance is felt (can wedge your knee under there)
- The patient is asked to push knee toward the table
- This force is resisted for 3-5 seconds
- Note: If you do not have the strength to resist the patient’s motion, you may slide your knee under the patient’s and ask them to push against your leg, then progress your leg further to stretch to new barrier.
- Allow at least 2 seconds for relaxation
- The new barrier is engaged and the process is repeated at least 3 times
- Passive Stretch
- Return to neutral
- Reassess
